1) BATTLE OF JERICHO

I wanted to start the album with a traditional gospel song. I LOVE the old hymns..especially the really soulful ones. When I was a kid my parents had Mahalia Jackson records and I loved listening to her amazing renditions of those old gospel songs including Battle of Jericho. My version was inspired by  the artist Ledisi who sang this in a recent movie about the life of Mahalia Jackson.

2) SEND IN THE WORSHIPPERS

This one is about using our Worship in times of battle just like Joshua and his army did when they marched around the walls of Jericho. Joshua 5:13

When we pour out to God with our worship He pours out His love to us. Worship is our weapon!

3) JUST YOU AND I

There is a group of ladies here in Nashville that meet up with me on Thursdays, otherwise known as ‘the Thursday night prayer group’. These amazing prayer warriors have taught me so much about prayers and interceding for one another and also how to truly worship the Lord. I wrote this song with them in mind and we often sing this together when we gather as a way of setting aside the earthly things in our lives that get in the way of our intimacy with God.
 

4) I SEE YOU SAVED

I love to sing this song and visualize people getting set free, prodigals coming home, chains being broken, the lost being found.

It’s a way of standing in the gap and having faith for someone who doesn’t have it for themselves and claiming salvation over them.

5) THE GOD I KNOW

This is the title track of the album and is a plea to those who have been hurt to give God another chance. I’ve come across so many people who have experienced some kind of ‘church hurt’, and have felt betrayed or let down by those they thought were safe, and then decided to walk away from God. And I’d like to say to them…wait…that wasn’t God! That was man. God is not the author of confusion and shame and would never cast you out because of anything you did.

Unfortunately we live in a fallen world and it’s really easy to blame God for the mistakes of man. And doesn’t the devil just love that when he can lie to us like that and we believe it!?

God never promised that there wouldn’t be trials and hard things to overcome but He did promise to never leave us or forsake us. Hebrews 13:5.

The God I’ve come to know on my spiritual journey is not an angry punishing God but one who has chosen me as a daughter of the kingdom and sacrificed His own son to take care of all our sins so we could be free from that bondage.

I’m learning to trust him a little more each day as I get to know the heart of the Father and I’m fairly certain there isn’t a broken part of us that He can’t heal.

6) ALONG FOR THE RIDE

Paul and I have a teenage daughter who has a horse named Trixie that she rides.  I wrote this about some of the challenges of parenting and how some days I wonder if we’ve done enough and how she’ll even survive in this crazy world we live in . But then I see her with that 1200 pound animal…so confident..in complete control and I see how brave and fearless she can be and I think..well, I guess she’s gonna be ok! And I’m reminded she’s a daughter of the kingdom just like I am.

7) READ MY HEART

This song was inspired by author/speaker Cindy McGill. Cyndi is a four Runner in creative prophetic outreach, building, and sending teams into places the church often has no presence.

I heard her say in one of her podcasts that when people come up to her from all walks of life, ‘I just  read their heart’.

I loved that idea for a song so I wrote this about the possibility that maybe we all need someone to just read our hearts and to look beyond the parts of us that are not so pretty or put together that tend to mask the genuine and beautiful parts of us.

8) Like Nineveh

I’ve always been intrigued by the story of Jonah and the whale and I remember hearing the story in Sunday school as a child. But I really didn’t know the rest of the story about why he was swallowed by the whale.

The song is about the city of Nineveh and how Jonah was asked by the Lord to speak to the people so that they could turn from their wicked ways, that their land would be healed. Jonah became afraid because he was worried the people would respond in a terrible way. So he tried to run away from God because of his fear, but God did not give up on him and sent him back by way of the whale and spit him back out on the shore.

Jonah finally agreed to be obedient to God and he spoke to the people, and they did indeed turn from their wicked ways and their land was healed.

I believe there are so many parallels in that story to where we are now in the church and in our world. And we are all a bit like Jonah, giving into our fear and doubt, forgetting that we serve a mighty God who makes impossible things possible if we are willing to step out in Faith.

9) Nothing To Carry

There’s a place in Nashville called ‘The Next Door’ which is a faith based recovery facility for women dealing with addiction. I’ve had the great privilege of partnering with my church and leading worship for them.

Many of these women have come from some extremely hard places; abusive situations, living on the streets and drug or alcohol addiction. When they get there, many of them are so broken and have nowhere else to turn which is so often when God does his best work!

I have absolutely loved being with these ladies and watching them come into the room, looking quite fearful and guarded, and unsure of what’s going on. But then the worship starts, and as each song goes by, I see some of their faces soften and the tears often flow and it’s evident that God is working in them. It’s such a beautiful experience and an honor to be a small part of the healing for these extremely courageous ladies.

I was inspired by them to write this song about laying the heavy things down at the foot of the cross…letting Jesus carry the things that were never meant for them to carry in the first place. And knowing the kind of peace and freedom that comes with complete surrender to God.

10) It Is Well

I really wanted to start this album with a hymn and end with a hymn. I so love the traditional songs of gospel music. I like to imagine how many times all of these songs have been sung and the prayers that have gone up with them. They would have to be in the millions! I believe there is so much power in these old songs. I really wanted to have some of that power combined with the new songs I included.

It Is Well has always been a favorite of mine and I love that we can sing this joy in joy and in sorrow knowing God is good ALL the time! It is always well with my soul no matter the circumstance. His love conquers all! 🙌🏻
